Pick the outcome before the send
Choose the metric tied to the decision you want to make: net revenue, orders, retained customers or another business outcome. Define the observation window and the eligible audience before seeing the result. Changing them after the campaign can turn a noisy result into a convenient story.
Keep the comparison credible
Use a representative control group from the same eligible audience. Record the size of each group, the incentive cost and any other campaigns the groups may receive. Overlap matters: if control customers receive a similar offer elsewhere, the difference no longer cleanly represents the treatment you thought you tested.
- Check the control configuration before launch.
- Inspect other scheduled campaigns and suppression rules.
- Compare the business outcome per eligible customer, not only responders.
Read the uncertainty
An uplift estimate is not automatically a reliable gain. Optimove's campaign analysis distinguishes results that are statistically significant from those that are not. A small segment or short measurement window can leave the effect unclear, even when one group happened to spend more.
Turn the test into a decision
If the result is persuasive after costs, consider a broader rollout or a more focused segment. If the signal is unclear, repeat with enough customers and a better-defined outcome. If the result is weak, revisit the customer need, timing and offer before sending more.
Control groups are valuable because they change decisions, not because they make a dashboard look rigorous.
